EVA foam
EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate, alternatively copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate) foam is a closed cell material of moderate flexibility and resilience. Among polymer foams, it is classified as a soft material, albeit noticeably stiffer than rubber foams. Its flexibility is only slightly higher than that of polyethylene foam. However, due to the resilience of its cells, EVA foam is more resistant than PE foam to repeated deformation from e.g. pressure.
Due to its closed-cell structure, EVA foam is non-absorbent. It offers extremely high buoyancy, as – depending on the density – it is many times lighter than water.
EVA is a thermoplastic material with a softening temperature lower than polyethylene (PE). It is easy to thermoform.

It is a very good thermal insulator at densities of 15-33 kg/m³. It can also be considered as sound-absorbing in certain applications.
Due to its straightforward production technology, unlike other polymers, EVA foam is available in a wide range of colours. Its surface is smooth and considered “aesthetic”, which accounts for its popularity among artists. It is sometimes referred to as “artistic” foam.
The most popular EVA foams in the world are Evazote® and its super soft version Supazote®.
It owes its reputation to its exceptional properties and outstanding parameters achieved at relatively low densities.
In terms of hardness, elasticity, and stiffness, closed-cell polymer foams are ranked as follows (starting from the softest):
SI ; CR ; EPDM ; EVA ; PE ; PP ; PA *
EVA foam application
Packaging and transport systems – due to the smooth (non-scratching) surface, crush resistance, and sufficient stiffness
– inserts and linings for toolboxes, transport crates, and transport baskets (cut and milled)
– transport dividers (cut and milled / dunnage), also known as “transport combs”
– display case fillings (for ceramic tiles, floor carpets and panels, architectural hardware, and others)
– other solutions designed to safeguard goods in transport
The toy industry and learning aids sector – due to the extensive selection of colours, low weight, smooth surface, and ease of keeping clean
– large blocks, puzzles, and mats for daycares, kindergartens, playrooms, and playgrounds
– educational toys
– large (oversized) board games
Footwear and orthopaedics – the most important factors here are crush resistance and flexibility
– contoured (thermoformed, milled, and cut) and flat insoles
– shoe elements (legs / insteps and vamps; midsoles)
– shoe collar padding
– orthopaedic wedges
– pads
Sports and recreation – due to the cushioning properties, considerable buoyancy, water resistance, aesthetic appeal, and thermoplastic attributes
– combat sports mats (judo, karate, aikido, taekwondo)
– body pads (impact protection)
– swimming kickboards and pool accessories
– lifeguard belts (swimming)
– kayak seats
– yacht deck lining
– backpack frames
Military equipment and uniforms
– Military equipment and uniforms
Rehabilitation
– rehabilitation mats and rollers
– movement rehabilitation aids
– development and rehabilitation blocks
Fishing – due to high buoyancy, water resistance, and availability in various colours
– fishing lures
Decorations and ornaments – mainly because of the available colours and availability in thin sizes
EVA foam processing
– heat sealing / laminating
– cutting and machine processing (multi-axis CNC machining)
– thermoforming
– bonding
